Dopamine’s role in mental health

Since we started our blog, one main focus has been to document the connection between mental health and nutrition. Dozens of studies have concluded that there’s a connection between a proper diet and positive mental health.

One possible reason for this link is that the body’s main neurotransmitters that regulate our mental health depend on the right balance of vitamins and minerals to provide the right conditions for their production and effectiveness.

Dopamine is one of those neurotransmitters.

Reduction of antipsychotics produces higher long-term recovery

The advocacy website Mad in America recently published a post about a Jama Psychiatry study that reported a breakthrough finding.

The article discovered that subjects in the study saw a doubled recovery rate if their antipsychotic treatment was reduced or discontinued compared to those who maintained their antipsychotic treatment.

Ashley’s success story: bipolar

Ashley first got ill in 2003 or 2004. She was prescribed medications, which she experienced severe side effects from. When Ashley brought up her issues and concerns with her doctor, she was told that this was normal and that she had nothing to worry about.

As time went on, the issues and side effects became more severe, and she was eventually admitted into the psych ward. Ashley stayed in the hospital for 3.5 months, where she was put on medication after medication, all with no success.
