Why does it take so long for doctors to practise what the research proves?

Last month, EMPowerplus researchers Bonnie Kaplan and Julia Rucklidge published an article on the website Mad in America regarding the use of nutrition to decrease the onset of psychosis.

They point out that it’s generally accepted (even recommended) that adults supplement their diet with multivitamins to improve their physical health and “reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis”.

Meditation may help with anxiety and depression

Earlier this year, American researchers published a study in Journal of the American Medical Association regarding the effect meditation can have on people who have psychological stress.

The researchers analyzed 47 clinical trials published since November 2012 and involving over 3,500 participants to determine whether meditation had any positive effect in improving stress-related outcomes (such as anxiety, depression, and stress).

How a Harvard psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist changed his mind about EMPowerplus

The following account of Dr. Charles Popper’s initial experience with EMPowerplus is taken from testimony he gave as an expert witness in Truehope’s 2006 court victory over Health Canada. He testified that up to that time, he had assisted 100–150 of his own patients and consulted with other doctors on 300–500 more patients in the use of EMPowerplus.

Dr. Popper has been using EMPowerplus in his private practice since 2000, and he published a commentary on EMPowerplus in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 2001.

9 ways diet affects mental health

A British researcher recently published a paper in which he reviewed past research to explore the connection between diet and cognitive function through the average lifespan.

Specifically, he explored how macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates) affect our mental health. This is an interesting strategy given that much of the research studying mental health and diet focuses on micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).

Dietary Patterns and Mental Health

Earlier this year, Canadian researcher Bonnie Kaplan and New Zealand researcher Julia Rucklidge wrote an article for Mad in America about the connection between dietary patterns and mental health.

The study of dietary patterns is different from the study of nutrient intake (amounts of various nutrients) and the study of nutrient status (serum assays of individual nutrients). Dietary pattern research takes a more holistic approach, exploring eating styles rather than specific vitamins or minerals in a single food.
