People with mood disorders more likely to use natural health products

Earlier this year, two Canadian researchers published an article in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine regarding the consumption rate of natural health products among people with mood disorders.

They studied 97 participants, who collectively took 267 natural health products, with the average participant taking 3. Over half of the participants took natural health products along with their medication.

One of the things the researchers noticed was that there is “a higher prevalence of NHP use among persons with mood disorders, particularly males, than in the general population”.

This is an interesting phenomenon, and one that researchers theorize could be a result of several factors, including:

  • Media interest in the topic
  • Increased availability of various information sources
  • Perceived efficacy and “naturalness” of therapies
  • Desire to reduce side effects
  • Dissatisfaction with conventional therapies leading to experimentation with different products

Regardless of the reason, there seems to be a desire among people with mood disorders to find a natural way to manage their disorders. For tens of thousands of people, Truehope products have met that desire.

Researchers suggest holistic approach for treating bipolar

Last fall, Australian researchers published a paper in the Medical Journal Australia, investigating treatment options available for bipolar disorder, including pharmacological options.

Despite the absence of clear evidence for their effectiveness, antidepressants are widely prescribed for BD and are the most widely used medication class for the depressive phase of the illness. A meta-analysis of the most recent, large-scale and rigorous trials found that they were discouragingly negative. The use of antidepressants in BD is therefore controversial, especially in the context of evidence that they can on occasion induce switching to mania or hypomania,
