Two years ago, American researchers published a study in theĀ Journal of Health Psychology showing a connection between trans fats and emotion regulation.
The researchers analyzed the dietary habits and emotion regulation of nearly 5,000 participants. Among the nutritional data, the researchers indicated that the top 5 sources of trans fatty acids were the following:
- Margarine
- Doughnuts
- Popcorn
- French fries
- Cookies
While measuring emotional regulation, researchers focused on emotional awareness, emotional clarity, and emotion regulation strategies.
What the researchers discovered was that those with higher trans fat consumption also had more difficulty with emotional awareness, clarity, and strategies than those who had lower intake levels of trans fats.
This is one more study in a growing body of research showing a positive connection between what we eat and our mental health.
