Free nutrition and mental health symposium in Calgary next month

Three mental health researchers will be in Calgary next month to discuss the impact that micronutrients have on mental health. Drs. Julia Rucklidge, Bonnie Kaplan, and Megan Rodway will speak at the free symposium, which will take place in the Ballroom in the University of Calgary MacEwan Conference and Events Centre on Sunday, April 13, 2014, 13:00 to 17:00. Bonnie Kaplan, Ph.D., is a professor in the departments of paediatrics and community health sciences in the University of Calgary’s medicine faculty. She is a well-known and respected research psychologist in Calgary, whose large body of work focuses on developmental disorders. Of interest to the autism community may be her research on micronutrient supplementation for the treatment of mood, aggression, and explosive rage. She will present research on public health studies of nutrition and mental illness.

Julia Rucklidge, Ph.D., is a professor with the psychology department at the University of Canterbury, as well as the director of their mental health and nutrition program.  She recently published the world’s first double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial on a vitamin-mineral treatment of ADHD in adults.  his study has garnered much attention in the international press, and offers a viable, non-drug treatment for ADHD. She will provide an overview of research on nutrient treatment of mental health disorders.

Megan Rodway, M.D., is a psychiatrist and fellow of integrative medicine. Experienced in both child and adult psychiatry, she will compare and contrast the allopathic or conventional approach to the treatment of mental disorders with the integrative one, including the role of nutrition and supplements.
