Fish oil can improve your mental health

salmon dinnerIn a study published in the journal Neurology earlier this year, researchers noted that diets that regulary include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may be able to help middle-aged and elderly adults slow the mental decline that leads to dementia.

Research subjects with high blood levels of omega-3’s were more likely to perform well during tests measuring mental functioning, and they experienced less age-related brain shrinkage.

Omega-3 fatty acids occur in fish (e.g. salmon, mackerel, anchovy, sardine, tuna, halibut), algae, and krill, as well as certain plants and nut oils.

“We feel fatty-acid consumption exerts a beneficial effect on brain aging by promoting vascular health,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Zaldy Tan. He added that this might include reducing blood pressure and inflammation.

Because omega-3 fatty acids may reduce inflammation, regularly eating foods rich in them may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis, as well as reduce wrinkles and puffiness.
