In January 2019, researchers in Ireland and the UK published a study in Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, showing a connection between B vitamin levels and mental health in older adults.
Researchers studied the mental health scores and B-vitamin biomarkers of nearly 5,200 adults who were 60 years old and older. They split them into 5 groups based on their blood test results.
These were the four B vitamins the researchers specifically examined:
- Vitamin B2 (otherwise known as riboflavin)
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin B9 (otherwise known as folate or folic acid)
- Vitamin B12
What they discovered was that participants in the bottom 20% for consumption of vitamins B2, B6, and B9 also had a higher depression risk compared to other participants. Those lowest in B6 also had higher anxiety risk.
On the other hand, the researchers found that participants who daily consumed foods fortified with B vitamins had a lower depression risk.
This is one more study in a growing body of research showing a connection between what we eat and our mental health. Here at Truehope, we’ve been promoting nutrition as mental health treatment for over 20 years.
Did you know that Truehope EMPowerplus Advanced contains all four of these B vitamins? In fact, one serving of EMPowerplus Advanced provides more than the recommended daily allowance for three of those vitamins and half of the RDA of the fourth.
EMPowerplus Advanced is an all-natural combination of 36 vitamins, minerals (including magnesium), amino acids, and antioxidants specifically formulated to support physical and mental well-being. Also, being the subject of over 30 clinical trials makes it the most independently researched micronutrient formula in the world.
