In early 2018, Australian researchers published a study in the Journal of Functional Foods, showing a connection between anxiety and stress levels and the consumption of yeast-based spreads (such as marmite, vegemite, promite, and aussiemite).
The researchers recruited over 500 participants, who they then asked questions regarding dietary and lifestyle habits, mood symptoms, and yeast-based spread consumption.
What the researchers found was that those who reported consuming yeast-based spreads also reported lower anxiety and stress symptoms. As well, those symptoms were even lower if the yeast-based spreads were fortified with vitamin B12. Yeast-based spreads are one of the richest sources of B vitamins, and research has consistently shown that B vitamins may play a role in mental health.
