Supplements offer alternative depression treatment

An American researcher recently published a paper in Clinical Psychological Science in which she reviews 200 published papers that studied the effectiveness of 5 nutritional supplements on treating depression.

The supplements studied in the papers included omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B complex (vitamins B12, B6, and folate), S-adenoxylmethionine (SAMe), 5-hyrdoxytryptophan (5-HTP), and magnesium.

What she discovered was that omega 3 and B vitamin supplements seem to offer the best chances as nutritional therapies for depression.

Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly available in some plants (such as flaxseed, hemp, canola, and walnuts) and fish. They support membrane function, help in regulating neurotransmission and signal transduction, and can influence gene expression. B vitamins are found in dark green, leafy vegetables, fish, and poultry, and they play an important role in neurotransmitter production.

Approximately 50% of depression cases are resistant to traditional pharmacological treatments, so nutritional therapy offers another potential treatment option, especially when used in conjunction with other evidence-based therapies.

In case you’re wondering. Truehope EMPowerplus contains all three of the B vitamins covered in the research.
