Bipolar disorder and foods to avoid

Anyone who has followed this blog since we started it a year ago will know that we think there is a strong connection between nutrition and mental health. Over the last several months, we have written several blog posts about nutrition and mental health.

We recently came across an article over at WebMD regarding bipolar and diet: Bipolar Disorder and Foods to Avoid. Key points of the article include:

  • Avoid the Western-style diet of red meats, saturated fats and trans fats, and simple carbohydrates.
  • Eat a balance of protective, nutrient-dense foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, lean meats, cold-water fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, soy products, and nuts and seeds.
  • Watch caloric intake and exercising regularly to maintain a healthy weight.

The article also sugests reducing caffeine and salt intake.

Check out their website for more details, and be sure to read the additional articles linked to at the end of their article.
