Malnutrition connected to depression in elderly

Two years ago, Iranian researchers studied how malnutrition is related to depression in independent, elderly people. The results were published in the Iranian Journal of Public Health.

Studying 1565 people , the researchers classified the participants into one of three groups: at risk for malnutrition, with malnutrition, and well nourished. They used the Geriatric Depression Score to measure their mood.

What they discovered was that there was “a significant statistical difference between the prevalence of malnutrition in depressed and non-depressed individuals”.

This further supports the connection between nutrition and mental health.
