How to take care of your mental health this autumn

Today marks the first day of autumn (in the northern hemisphere), and with the dwindling sunlight and cooling weather, it can be a challenge for some people to maintain positive mental health.

Here are 5 ways you can take care of your mental health this autumn season:

1. Enjoy the season

Even thought the days are getting cooler, they aren’t too cold yet. Many days, you can don a sweater and still enjoy a leisurely stroll in a nearby park or take your dog for a walk. Getting outside will allow you to get more sunshine, hear the sounds of nature, and see the beauty of the season, all of which can improve your mood. Who doesn’t like the sound of crunching leaves under our boots?

2. Start a hobby

If getting outside becomes more challenging, particular as autumn progresses, consider taking up a new hobby. A new hobby will keep us busy and focused, and often they can help us socialize with others. Creative hobbies in particular are great for lifting us up.

3. Eat seasonal fruit and veggies

There is something mystical about eating fresh fruits and vegetables in the autumn. It’s harvest time, and you should be able to find great deals on fresh, local produce. Of course, a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables helps immensely with positive mental health.

4. Check out local festivals

Many places hold fairs and festivals around harvest time. Check out some of your local attractions and farms to see if anything is happening near you. If there are, make an outing of it, taking along friends and family. You’ll make great memories and being with others can make you happier.

5. Don’t forget to exercise

Autumn is often the start of new TV shows, which can tempt us into our living rooms. If you have a treadmill or a stationary bike at home, bring it to the TV (or the other way around), so can watch TV while you workout. Or you can do body weight exercises (like squats, push ups, etc). Keeping yourself movement is great for keeping you healthy physically and mentally.
