How amino acids affect mental health

In 2008, researchers from the Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation published an article in the Nutrition Journal entitled “Nutritional therapies for mental disorders”. In it, they outlined many of the connections between nutrition and mental health. Among these connections was the role amino acids can play in the occurrence and treatment of mood disorders.

What are amino acids?

Amino acids are the building blocks of your body; the body uses them to synthesize proteins and they act as a source of energy when oxidized into urea and carbon dioxide. There are 22 standard amino acids, 9 of them essential. While the body can synthesize some amino acids from other compounds at a level necessary for normal growth, the essential amino acids cannot be, so they must come from food sources.

How do amino acids affect mental health?

For example, the article above points out that the body uses the amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine to produce serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, deficiencies of which are associated with depression.

It also indicated that some people with bipolar disorder have a deficiency in the amino acid taurine, which may increase their manic episodes. In addition, some schizophrenia patients found a reduction in subtle symptoms after taking the amino acid glycine. Finally, the article indicates that tryptophan can help with obsessive compulsive disorder by increasing serotonin levels.
