Low B6 and iron levels connected to panic attacks

In November 2018, researchers in Japan published a new study in Acta Medica Okayama, showing a connection between levels of B6 and iron and panic attacks.

The researchers measured the B6 and iron levels of 21 patients who had been admitted to hospital emergency departments for panic attacks or hyperventilation. They then compared the measurements to those of 20 volunteers.

What they discovered was that the B6 and iron levels of the patients were significantly lower than those of the volunteers, suggesting that vitamin B6 and iron play a role in panic attacks. What researchers do know is that B6 and iron are cofactors in synthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to our feelings of general well-being and happiness.

This is one more study in a growing body of research showing a connection between what we eat and our mental health. Here at Truehope, we’ve been promoting nutrition as mental health treatment for over 20 years.
